LITIGATION MANAGEMENT, INC. (LMI) EXPANDS WITH GROUNDBREAKING PRODUCT LAUNCH
New partner company, SmartCase, Inc., leverages LMI’s 25 years of experience in managing medical information in litigation to address needs of users with innovative Web-based application
CLEVELAND (August 1, 2007) – Leveraging 25 years of expertise in medical information management in litigation, Cleveland’s Litigation Management, Inc. (LMI) unveils partner company, SmartCase, Inc. Headquartered in Highland Hills, SmartCase, Inc. offers an innovative Web-based technology specifically designed for small-to-mid sized law firms, corporate legal departments, paralegals and legal nurse consultants—outside of the existing defense counsel client network of LMI. This software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering is the first of its kind in the industry.
Since 1984, LMI has acquired, reviewed, analyzed and summarized millions of pages of medical records and provided defense counsel around the country with summaries and analyses that have contributed to the successful resolution of cases.
With the introduction of SmartCase, Inc. and the company’s sophisticated technology – a Web-based platform that allows users to do everything from input and store images of medical records, sort and organize by subject, case or client to share data with team members and create a final medical analysis work product pre-trial – LMI is positioned for growth.
“SmartCase enables us to provide effective medical information management to users who up until now could not justify the investment in the additional systems and personnel to manage a varying workload,” says Elizabeth Juliano, founder and president of LMI, and CEO of SmartCase, Inc. LMI, recognized as the industry leader in medical information management when it comes to large-scale litigations, has handled more than 100,000 cases—including some of the country’s most publicized involving pharmaceuticals, toxic tort, personal injury and premises liability actions.
With the introduction of the SmartCase application, LMI is enabling users to create, store and deliver medical summary work products. “We’ve packaged all of our expertise into this application so that all parties involved in medical-based litigation can benefit,” says Juliano.
LMI’s existing Web-based technology, called lm[i]sight™, is designed to meet the needs of defense teams for major corporations and managed internally by LMI’s experienced team—who have extensive medical and/or legal backgrounds. “We pursue the medical records and then scan them into the system,” says Juliano, “and then provide the client with the exact work product they need.”
SmartCase.com provides a similar platform and work product to lm[i]sight, but on a more manageable scale for day-to-day use. “It’s designed to be used and managed by the individual subscriber, not by our team internally,” says SmartCase, Inc. President Carey Marousek, hence the friendlier user interface. “SmartCase is really a pared down version of the LMI technology,” she finishes.
The ideal subscriber, according to Marousek, are those specializing in medical malpractice or personal injury cases. “SmartCase is extremely functional and also offers the flexibility of subscription-based pricing,” she says.
Introduced in early 2007 at LegalTech in New York City, SmartCase is already generating buzz. “Initial feedback is extremely positive,” says Marousek, whose team is in the process of marketing the new application to small-to-mid sized law firms, paralegals and legal nurse consultants. “It’s secure, flexible, portable and accessible 24/7,” she says.
The SmartCase application can be accessed at any time, from any computer with an Internet connection. Users simply log onto www.SmartCase.com to access their cases, and rest assured says Marousek, “that all of their information is fully secure.”
To meet the needs of a law firm with multiple users and a single user such as the independent legal nurse consultant, SmartCase is available in two options: SmartCasepro and SmartCaseone. “SmartCase promises to become an essential tool for attorneys, paralegals and legal nurse consultants handling claims or litigation involving illness or injury,” concludes Marousek.
SmartCase, Inc. is also headquartered in the Cleveland area, having taken new space at 22901 Millcreek Blvd in Highland Hills.

FOUNDER AND
PRESIDENT OF LITIGATION MANAGEMENT, INC. NAMED 2007
ERNST & YOUNG
ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
CLEVELAND (July 9, 2007) – At an awards banquet held at the Renaissance
Hotel, downtown Cleveland, Tuesday, June 26, 2007, Ernst & Young named Elizabeth B. Juliano, founder and
president of Litigation Management, Inc. (LMI), this year’s Northeast Ohio Entrepreneur of the Year.
The program, founded in 1986, honors entrepreneurs whose ingenuity, hard work and perseverance have created
and sustained successful business ventures.
LMI is the industry leader in the acquisition, analyses and
assimilation of medical records in large-scale litigation—even working on some of the country’s
most publicized cases in history involving toxic tort, product liability and premises
liability actions.
Juliano founded the company with knowledge gained while working as a paralegal preparing
medical record summaries for Cleveland attorneys defending asbestos litigation cases. “There was an
immediate need for medical records management,” she says, “particularly with the growing number
of product liability and mass tort cases and record reviews being critical.” In March 1984, Juliano
launched Litigation Management, Inc. to the legal community in Northeast Ohio.
Today, the
founder and her firm are recognized names across the country—Juliano, the category creator of
‘medical information management’ in litigation and LMI, the first specialty litigation support
team and technology. Over the past 23 years, the LMI team has acquired, reviewed, analyzed, and summarized
millions of pages of medical records and provided defense counsel around the country with
summaries and analyses that have contributed to the successful resolution of cases.
This year, the
company’s employees number more than 400 in Cleveland alone. Nationwide, Juliano counts upwards of 700
staff members, which is likely to grow to 1,000 within the next few years.
Behind the success
and Juliano’s award Tuesday evening, she says, is the entire team at LMI. “Our employees are
entrepreneurs in spirit.” “They may not have started the company, but still share in the
original vision of LMI and work to provide high quality service and product 24/7,” says Juliano.
She, herself, has worked every position within the company to not only understand every
operational aspect, from top to bottom, but to understand each employee’s position, including specific
roles, responsibilities and challenges—another reason behind the accolade from Cleveland’s Ernst
& Young.
Entrepreneur of the Year award recipients are determined based not only on
entrepreneurial spirit, but also the financial performance of their company, strategic growth, community
and global impact, innovation and personal integrity and influence.
The Ernst & Young
Entrepreneur of the Year Awards were established in 1986 to recognize and motivate individuals demonstrating
the highest levels of entrepreneurial endeavor. The program honors entrepreneurs who have established
themselves as leaders and whose determination has created and sustained successful growth businesses.
Juliano and LMI will add The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award to the company’s
list of acknowledgements locally and regionally. In 2006, Juliano was in the class of Rainmakers, an award
sponsored by Northern Ohio Live magazine, and in 1997 named a “Top 10 Business Owner” according
to the National Association of Women Business Owners. In that same year, she received the “Woman
of Influence” from Crain’s Cleveland Business. In 1995, The National
Association of Women Business Owners sponsored the nomination of Juliano for the Northeast Ohio Entrepreneur
of the Year Award.

The SmartCase application is available in two options: SmartCasepro and SmartCaseone.

Both applications allow subscribers to monitor multiple cases in a single view, and quickly retrieve other active cases. Subscribers can also scan documents into the system, or submit them to SmartCase for scanning and posting to the appropriate case. Tools to embed hyperlinks of imaged documents within the body of a medical summary document are also available, giving subscribers the ability to produce professional and powerful work products.

"It enables users to handle more cases, and cases with demanding information requirements without the need for the increased overhead of equipment or IT professionals.
